Funeral Wishes: The Conversation Worth Having Early
Jun 13, 2026Of all the things left unsaid, funeral wishes might be the most common, and the most painful to guess at. Burial or cremation. A big send-off or something small. A particular song, a particular place. When nobody knows, grieving families are forced to make heavy decisions blind, often while exhausted and second-guessing each other.
Why it helps to say it out loud
Writing your wishes down, and just as importantly talking about them, takes an enormous weight off the people you love. Instead of wondering "what would they have wanted", they get to simply honour what you told them. It turns an anxious guess into an act of love they can feel sure about.
What is worth covering
You do not need to plan every detail. A few things make the biggest difference: burial or cremation, any religious or cultural elements that matter to you, where you would like it held, and any specific wishes like music, readings or who you would like to speak. Even "keep it simple and have a good cup of tea afterwards" is a gift, because it gives permission.
How to start the conversation
It rarely needs to be a heavy, formal sit-down. It can be as light as "I saw a funeral on TV and realised you have no idea what I would want, can I tell you?" Going first with your own wishes often makes it easier for others, including older parents, to share theirs in return.
The conversations most families keep putting off
Funeral wishes are one of a handful of conversations that matter enormously and almost never happen on their own. We built The Estate Conversation Kit for exactly these moments: the talks most families avoid, with word-for-word opening lines so each one actually gets had. And once wishes are shared, The Estate Organiser gives them a place to be written down so they are not lost.
